Turn heavy GIFs into practical video files

Animated GIFs are easy to share, but they are rarely efficient. A short loop can become a large file because GIF stores a limited color animation format rather than modern video compression. Converting the animation to MP4 often produces a much smaller download that plays smoothly in browsers, messaging apps and social feeds. This tool is useful for product demos, support clips, meme loops, UI recordings and any animation that no longer needs to stay in the GIF format.

The conversion is private. Your GIF is not uploaded to a server or processed by a third-party queue. The page loads ffmpeg.wasm when you start, writes the selected GIF into the browser's temporary media file system and encodes an MP4 download on your device. When processing finishes, the temporary files are removed from the engine.

Why MP4 is better for most animations

MP4 supports efficient video codecs, full-color frames and playback controls that GIF does not provide. It is a better format when you want a loop to load quickly on a web page or fit inside a message size limit. The tool uses an MP4-friendly pixel format so the result plays on common devices and browsers, and it adds fast-start metadata so playback can begin sooner when the file is hosted on the web.

Things to check after conversion

GIF and MP4 are different media types, so the result may not be visually identical in every case. Transparent GIF backgrounds become normal video pixels because MP4 does not preserve GIF transparency. Very large GIFs may take time because every frame must be decoded and re-encoded in the browser. The first run may pause while the WebAssembly engine downloads, but later runs in the same tab can begin faster. Keep the source GIF until you have checked the downloaded MP4.

How to use

  1. Choose GIFDrop or browse for the animated GIF you want to convert.
  2. Create MP4The tool encodes the animation as browser-friendly MP4 video.
  3. DownloadSave the smaller video version and compare it with the original.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting a GIF upload it anywhere?
No. The GIF is decoded and converted locally in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm.
Why does the first GIF conversion download an engine?
The first run downloads the WebAssembly ffmpeg engine. Later conversions in the same tab can reuse the loaded engine.
Why turn a GIF into MP4?
MP4 files are often much smaller than GIFs and play better in modern browsers, messages and social feeds.
Will transparency be preserved?
MP4 does not support GIF-style transparency. Transparent areas are rendered into normal video pixels.
