The page runs ffmpeg.wasm, a WebAssembly build of the well-known ffmpeg media engine. Each file is written to a temporary in-memory file system, converted and returned to you as a normal download. You can even preview the converted audio before saving it, and batch several files in one go.

Settings and quality for MP3

MP3 is a compressed format that plays almost everywhere. Pick a bitrate: 128 kbps is small and fine for speech, 192 kbps is a good general default, 256 kbps suits most music and 320 kbps is the highest quality MP3 allows, at a larger file size.

Keep in mind that conversion cannot restore detail a lossy M4A or other compressed source already lost. Converting between two lossy formats re-encodes the sound a second time, so start from the best original you have whenever possible.

Tips for best results

The first conversion downloads the ffmpeg engine, which can take a moment on a slow connection; it is cached afterwards. Long files use browser memory, so close heavy tabs for very large recordings. Always play the preview and keep your original M4A file until you are happy with the result.

Because processing happens locally, there is no file size limit imposed by a server, only the memory of your device. Tags such as title and artist are copied over when the target format supports them. If a result sounds wrong, try a higher bitrate or quality setting and convert again from the original file instead of re-converting a copy that was already converted once before.
